*See The Power of Your Parent’s Approval pt 1

There is another epidemic among students that is largely unaddressed regarding their parents. There is an age old principle in the Bible called “honor.” In fact, in the oldest laws that have ever existed, honoring parents is top on the list.

“Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”
Ephesians 6.2-3

This is one of the ORIGINAL Ten Commandments that God gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai. Not only that, but it’s the only one that has a conditional promise with it. The promise being that things will go well for you and you will live a long life on earth. The condition being that you must honor your parents.

Honor is a word that has lost much of it’s true meaning. We think of movies like Gladiator or The Last Samurai, where honor is this romantic, glorified thing that is mostly unobtainable. But honor is simply respect, reverence, to value, to give preference to, or weighty as in gold. The value of gold is measured in weight. You don’t put gold in a junk drawer. You give it a place of honor. When you honor someone, what they say has value, it has merit. It has clout, it carries weight with you. When something is valuable, you will keep it a long time, and cherish it. Honor can be displayed in action, word, and even thought. But all true honor originates from the heart.

And so the Lord says, “These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.
Isaiah 29.13

Honor for parents must begin in the heart, otherwise it’s not true honor. It’s fake, and is actually dishonor because of it’s deceit.

The Bible is clear that we are to honor our parents! Not only honor them, but obey them as well! Naturally, the next question is, “What if my parents aren’t Christian? Do I still have to obey and honor them?” The answer is a huge YES! You are to still obey, and do so with honor. In fact, there is only one situation biblically where you are allowed to disobey your parents and not fall under the curse of disobedience. That situation is if your parents ask/tell you to do something that is contrary to God’s Word. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego did not obey the King’s order to bow before an idol, but they did so with honor. When Nebuchadnezzar bad them brought before him for their disobedience, they still honored him, even in their disobedience.

16 The three men replied, “Your Majesty, we don’t need to defend ourselves. 17 The God we worship can save us from you and your flaming furnace.”
Daniel 3.16-17

The basic principle of honor is simply this: Honor God’s authorities, and God will honor you. Parents are authorities over us, and we are to honor them. By honoring them, God honors us by giving us long life, and a good one.

*See The Power of Your Parent’s Approval pt 2

One of the things that is so huge in youth culture, whether it’s in the Christian subculture or not, is parents approval. Over the years I have watched students do things to try and get approval from mom and dad. Whether it’s perform well in athletics, academics, or some other avenue, I have seen countless students live in such a way to be noticed by mom and dad.

There is nothing more significant that the relationship or lack of relationship between a teenager and his/her parents. About 89% of America can’t say that they have been raised in a home with mom and dad who love each other and are affirming and have unconditional acceptance. There are a variety of reasons why this is the case, which we won’t get into here. Basically, this is a problem. What’s worse, is that it’s creating a generation of dysfunctional people because they don’t know what it’s like to have mom and dad’s approval.

Worse still, their lack of healthy relationship with their parents translates into an unhealthy view of God. We hear phrases like, “God the Father,” etc., and often times the line of thought goes, “If God is anything like my dad, I don’t want to have anything to do with Him.” This is one of the worst attacks of Satan, yet goes unaddressed in youth ministries all over. If they equate their earthly father, no matter how great or terrible, to God the Father, then we have an issue on our hands.

The great thing is, no matter how wonderful or awful parents might be, God is nothing like them. There’s a story in the Bible where Jesus is being baptized by John the Baptist. As he comes out of the water, we see the Holy Spirit descend like a dove on him, and we hear the voice of the Father saying, “This is My Son, chosen and marked by My love…the One who is the DELIGHT OF MY LIFE.” Before Jesus had actually done ANYTHING, God said He was the one He loves, and is the delight of His life. That applies to us as well! We are God’s children!

We know that Jesus died on the cross, and it was for our sins and all that. But many times, after we give our lives to Him, we think that we have to be perfect. We think that we have to be good enough, and holy enough, and pure enough to KEEP His love! But there is nothing you could ever do to make God stop loving you. You never have to earn God’s approval. Jesus died on the cross because God ALREADY GAVE His approval.

He is the only parent that will always do it right. He is the only parent who can always say the right things to you. He is the only parent that can always be there when you need Him most! He is the only parent that can love you enough that no matter how many times you messed up and how great that mess up was, as long as you are genuine and ask for forgiveness, He gives it without conditions. He is the only parent who will never get impatient. He is the only parent who will always give you His undivided attention. Regardless of how you view and attempt to get the approval of your earthly parents, be assured that your Heavenly Parent already approves of you. God wants you to know that He is your Father!

In the TV show, FlashForward, a global blackout occurs, killing 20 million people as cars crash, airplanes and helicopters fall from the sky, people drown, fall to their death, etc. Those that survive have an amazing experience. They actually see 6 months into the future. And not just any future, but their own future. Their consciousness actually jumps ahead to a specific date 6 months later, where each individual sees what they were doing at that moment.

Have you ever wondered what your future would be like? What if you actually saw your future? What if you actually caught a glimpse of your own future? How would you respond? What emotions would you feel? Would you be happy by what you saw? Would you be sad? Excited? Fearful? Perhaps it would be too much of a wake up call, to actually see our future.

In this series we talked about three main areas where our choices greatly affect our futures. There are certainly many more avenues we could have gone with this concept, but the three that we talked about specifically at Adrenaline were pertinent to our students.

6 Months to Eternity

When we talk about “eternity” we are referring to what happens after we die. There are a lot of theories and beliefs about the “afterlife.” But the Bible is very clear on what happens when we die. There are basically two places a person could go, depending on one choice while they are still here on this earth. Heaven and a forever future with Christ, or Hell, and a forever future in torment and separation from God. That’s it. There’s no purgatory, temporary holding place, becoming ghosts or some other kind of spirit.

A. Everyone will die. Hebrews 9.27 says, “…each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment…” That is one part of destiny that is universal. Everyone will die. While we are super positive at Adrenaline about what God can/wants to do in people, the reality is that everyone will die.

What if you had a FlashForward and you experienced your own death? Or worse, you don’t have a FlashForward because in less than 6 months, you will be dead? You don’t know how or when, but you know that you do. How would that change the way you live right now? Would you be in a place forever with Christ? Or forever separated from Him?

B. Not Everyone is Ready for Eternity. Jesus came to this earth to save mankind from sending themselves to Hell. But the requirement for receiving that free gift is believing in Jesus and making Him Savior and Lord. Not everyone has made that choice. Even worse still, not everyone KNOWS about that choice.

It’s our job as the church to get out there and show the world that Jesus loves them and wants to live in them! But we can get so self-centered that we forget that we’re to love people. We come to God with OUR needs and OUR stuff, and don’t think twice about the people around us that don’t even have Christ in their life.

Let’s do what we can to win people to Christ!

2. 6 Months of Unguarded Relationships

Relationships are the number one thing that takes teenagers away from God. Whether it’s a close friend who is a negative influence, or a dating relationship, I have seen more students get taken out over relationships, the latter more than the former.

A. Unguarded Friendships. I have said it before, and I’ll say it again. Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future. The close friends that you associate with greatly determine the outcome of your life, good or bad. I turned out pretty good due in large part to the close friends I had in high school and college. They were godly, hungry, passionate people. That caused me to be godly, hungry, and passionate.

Too many teenagers are simply reactive when it comes to their close friends. They let people in who accept them, instead of thinking through as they watch the other person’s habits, values, morals, etc. They don’t realize that that person will greatly influence their future, as they influence their decision making.

B. Unguarded Affections

Proverbs 4.23 tells us, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” There is nothing more valuable to you and to God than your heart, and when you give your heart away unguarded, you are trainwrecking your future. Who you give your heart to is the second most important decision you will ever make in your entire life. It would be wise to make that decision effectively.

If you had a FlashForward about a relationship and saw where it would lead, how would that change that relationship? I know far too many teenagers that walked away from God over a relationship, because they just HAD to be with this person. From the outside, you could tell this person was not the one that God had for them, but they went for them anyways.

God has an amazing pattern for matchmaking that we find in Genesis 2.

“God said, ‘It’s not good for the Man to be alone; I’ll make him a helper, a companion.’…Then God put the Man into a deep sleep. As he slept, God removed one of his ribs and replaced it with flesh. God then used the rib that He had taken from the Man to make Woman and presented her to the Man. The Man said, ‘Finally! Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh! I will name her ‘Woman’ for she was made from Man.’ Therefore a man leaves his father and mother and embraces his wife. They become one flesh.”

Genesis 2.18-24

We see an incredible three step process here that God takes every person on.

1. Adam first met his MASTER. Adam had to know his Master long before he would know his mate. Work on your relationship with God first.
2. Adam then did his MISSION. God created Adam to have fellowship with Himself. Then he gave him a mission. Name all the animals in the garden, and take care of it! Adam was on mission when God brought his mate.
3. Adam was asleep when God brought his MATE. God decided that Adam needed a mate, but He didn’t bring her until He put Adam to sleep. Most times, God will bring the right person along for you when you are busy knowing your Master and doing your mission. That way you aren’t looking for a mate, and God is allowed to bring them along for you.

This is exactly how it happened with Malia and I. We were both in love with Jesus, doing what God had called us to do when He brought us together.

If you want to meet your mate, focus on knowing your Master first, and do what He has called you to do. Then when you aren’t looking, He’ll bring them along when the time is right.

For one, he saw himself watching the news, and remembered what he saw. Another man saw his daughter in a cot in Afghanistan as he was helping nurse her back to health. She was supposedly dead for two years. Another woman saw herself getting a prenatal sonogram. She isn’t pregnant and wondered who the father would be. A young doctor who was dying of a terminal cancer saw himself in a restaurant with a beautiful young lady. He remembers the emotions he felt and it gave him hope. Still, another woman saw herself being drowned by someone else, and remembers dying in her FlashForward. Another man saw himself in his office being attacked by armed men. Still another woman saw herself with a man that was not her husband, and she remembers intense feelings that she had.
Lastly, another young man didn’t see anything at all, and determined that the reason is because he would be dead in less than 6 months.

Everyone had an experience where they saw their future.

1. 6 Months of Nothingness

For some, choices they make to be lazy, not really do a whole lot, etc. will lead them to a realization that they have just wasted 6 months. The months have come and gone, and they have nothing to show for it!

It’s easy to get caught up in this “nothingness” kind of life. Nothingness can be described like a comfortable bed. It’s easy to get in and tough to get out of. We covered two areas of “nothingness” that I think affect many people in the church.

A. Nothingness toward God. Many people find it easy to just do the bare minimum to get by, without ever really sacrificing anything to get close to God. 6 months of nothingness toward God results in spiritual stagnation, boredom, and complacency. Another word is apathetic. You just don’t care. If you are at a place where you really don’t care about God, take a look and see if you have done anything about your relationship with Him.

B. Nothingness toward Destiny. It amazes me how many people wait for something to happen to show them, tell them, lead them to a future that God has planned for them. It’s as if they think that destiny is automatic.

I think of this student I saw on the Ellen show, named Greyson Chance. Here is a 12 year old kid with an incredible singing voice. Looking at him, he is that awkward 12 year old that is still growing up. He competed in a talent contest at his middle school, and his performance was put up on youtube. That video has more than 22 million views as of this writing. The kid performed twice on the Ellen show, the first time with an encouragement from Lady Gaga (the singer of the song he performed at the talent show) and the second time performing a song that he wrote, landing him $10,000 from Ellen, a brand new piano from Yamaha, and a record deal on a new label.

This kid has a gift, and didn’t just wait for someone to discover him. He actually competed in a contest, and his youtube performance went viral, launching him into destiny. The point is, he did something. He didn’t just sit and wait for it to happen. It’s much easier to turn a car that is moving than one that isn’t. Destiny is not automatic, get out there and do SOMETHING, and along the journey, God will open the doors.
