The one square mile Tenderloin District contains the largest population of homeless in the country. There are over 500 high-rise apartments filled with low-income and the poor. The need is great.

[ Info ]

The Tenderloin is a neighborhood in downtown San Francisco, California, in the flatlands on the southern slope of Nob Hill, situated between the Union Square shopping district to the northeast and the Civic Center office district to the southwest. It encompasses about 50 square blocks and a conservative description has it bounded on the north by Post Street, on the east by Mason Street, on the south by Market Street and on the west by Larkin Street. The northern boundary with Lower Nob Hill historically has been set at Geary Street.

With housing consisting almost entirely of single-room-occupancy hotel rooms, studio and one bedroom apartments, the Tenderloin historically housed single adults and couples. After World War II, with the decline in central cities throughout the United States, the Tenderloin lost population, creating a large amount of vacant housing units by the mid-1970s. Beginning in the late 1970s, after the Vietnam War, the Tenderloin received large numbers of refugees from Southeast Asia—first ethnic Chinese from Vietnam, then Khmer from Cambodia and Hmong from Laos. The low cost vacant housing, and the proximity to Chinatown through the Stockton Street Tunnel, made the area attractive to refugees and resettlement agencies. Studio apartments became home for families of four and five people and became what a local police officer called “vertical villages.” The Tenderloin quickly increased from having just a few children to having over 3,500 and this population has remained. A number of neighborhood Southeast Asian restaurants, banh mi coffee shops, ethnic grocery stores, video shops and other stores were created at this time, which still exist.

The one square mile Tenderloin District contains the largest population of homeless in the country. There are over 500 high-rise apartments filled with low-income and the poor. The need is great.

We had a TREMENDOUS time at camp this year! We took 14 students and 4 adults, many of them for the first time. They experienced the presence of God like never before all week long. The week was filled with incredible services, fun competitions, and great fellowship. The camp theme this year was HEROES, talking about what it is to be a real hero for the cause of Christ. At camp, more than 200 people were filled with the Holy Spirit, including five of our students and one of our adults.

Here is the highlight video from this year’s AMAZING Heroes Summer Camp 2010. If you didn’t go, you MISSED OUT!

[ Details ]

Each year we host approximately 1,500 young people at our Easter and two Summer Camps. Of these, many are from foster care programs and the inner cities of California and are able to come because of our scholarship program. Along with exciting team activities, students are given a safe environment of hope and healing, and are presented with the Gospel in a culturally relevant style. In the past twenty-five years of camps, we have had the opportunity to minister to more than 20,000 students, many of which have been called into full-time ministry. Each camp season has brought with it reports of lives that have been transformed by the power of God. Today, after years of ministry through Radical Reality youth camps, we are delighted to see that our Camp Staff is made up largely of people who themselves were once students at camp!

Bands

Rush of Fools

Sometimes aspiring Christian artists spend years and years developing their music and building their ministry before God places them on a national platform. Then there are times when God hits the fast forward button and a new act seems to emerge almost overnight. Rush Of Fools is definitely on the divine fast track.

In an amazingly short period of time, the Birmingham-based band went from winning a national talent contest to landing a record deal with Midas Records, a management deal with industry veteran Andrew Patton’s Patton House Entertainment, and a booking agreement with the Greg Oliver Agency. This spring the band will embark on the World on Fire Tour with By the Tree and The Turning.

The first single, “Undo,” is a compelling ballad that paints a portrait of God’s mercy and grace. Willis possesses a warm, evocative voice that draws the listener into the songs, and many will find themselves in the poignant lyric. “We see what kids are wanting and we know what they yearn for, and it’s still the same thing we yearn for,” says Willis. “A lot of the inspiration for our songs comes from talking with people and feeling the same things.I think everyone can connect to our music in some way.”

Enamored with the band’s fresh sound and pure hearts, several of the industry’s top producers signed on to help craft the project, and the band is thrilled to be working with Matt Bronlewee (Michael W. Smith, Jars of Clay, Leeland), Scott Davis (Jessie Daniels) and Jason Ingram, who fronts acclaimed band The Longing.

Revive Band

2004. That’s the year it all started.

Dave Hanbury (vocals) had been performing for years as a singer, with success in many genres of music – from choirs, to jazz and rock.
Tyler Hall (guitar) had played acoustic and electric guitar for many years with various worship groups and was passionate about song writing.

When a mutual friend introduced them, the boys hit it off immediately. Sharing a deep passion for Christian music, they headed into Ty’s garage where they combined their musical skills and began to belt out some tunes under the band name of Me and Ty .

Soon after the launch of “Going Up?”, Rich Thompson (bass) and Mike TenKate (drums) joined Dave and Ty to complete the band in 2004.

With their new lineup, the name Me+Ty was no longer reflective of the group’s style or direction (or personel!). And so, the boys adopted a new name – Revive. This name is truly representative of the band, as they seek to encourage, challenge, and see revival.

Revive recorded “Where I Belong” with producer Phil Gaudion (from the Paul Colman Trio), with mastering at Crystal and Sony studios. The album went really well with great sales and a tonne of great feedback.

Revive have just finished their second album “Trafalgar street” with producer David Nicholas(Veronicas, INXS, Zed and Sir Elton John!). They are very excited about the new direction their music is taking and are very excited to share it with the world.

Glenn Packiam

Glenn Packiam is an Associate Pastor at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he leads the Sunday Night Campus and serves as the Director of the New Life School of Worship.
What all this means is that Glenn talks with a lot of people, plays a lot of music, and drinks a lot of coffee. And all of that makes for a wonderful life. Glenn and his absolutely amazing wife, Holly, and their two adorable daughters, Sophia and Norah, are enjoying life in the shadow of the mighty Rocky Mountains.
